TENNIS PROFESSIONALS


RICK JOHNSTON, HEAD TENNIS PROFESSINAL


Rick is the Head Tennis Professional at the Calgary Winter Club and he has been with the Club since 1994. He is in charge of all aspects of the tennis section and directly runs a large portion of the cardio tennis classes which are very popular with our members. Rick has been involved in Club tennis for over 25 years. Previously he was at the Glenmore Club in Calgary and the Blue Mountain Racquet Club in Coquitlam B.C. He has coached Alberta teams at the Canada Summer Games (1993) and Nationals. Rick is certified as a Level Three Coach.

PETER SMYTHE, ASSISTANT TENNIS PROFESSIONAL


Peter started at the Calgary Winter Club in 2007 and has been teaching players of all ages and levels for over thirty years. He has coached athletes to 12 Canadian National Championships, and has personally won two as a player. Over the years, Peter has received two Tennis Canada Coaching Excellence Awards and has also represented Canada internationally as a Wheelchair Tennis Touring Coach. He is certified as a Tennis Canada Level Three Coach, and Level Two Club Professional, and is a USPTA Certified Professional One. He served as Tennis Canada’s Head Course Facilitator for Alberta from 1995 - 2009. He is currently on Tennis Canada’s Progressive Tennis Support Team for Alberta and serves on Tennis Alberta’s Junior High Performance Committee. Peter’s role at Calgary Winter Club includes training competitive juniors, teaching adult lessons, and running cardio tennis, leagues, round robins, and tennis socials.

ADRIAN COURT, ASSISTANT TENNIS PROFESSIONAL


Adrian Court has been coaching at the Calgary Winter Club since 2004. Adrian is a certified level 2 coach. He is originally from Sudbury Ontario Adrian received a tennis Scholarship to the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he played singles and doubles in the #1 position. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. In 2010 Adrian won the Western Canadian Singles Championships. Adrian is one of the main course conductors for instructors and coaches in Alberta.


PROGRAMS


The Calgary Winter Club Tennis Section offers the following programs for members:
  • Singles, doubles and mixed doubles leagues.
  • Singles, doubles and mixed doubles club tournaments.
  • Junior club tournament with multiple categories.
  • Social events for all ages.
  • Interclub Teams for 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 levels.
  • Cardio Tennis.
  • Adult instructional programs.
  • Junior competitive and recreational instructional programs for ages 5 and older, including progressive tennis programs for kids 10 and under.
  • Organized play for seniors, and competitive u12 juniors?
The Tennis Department also periodically runs tournaments, certification courses, and fundraisers in conjunction with Tennis Canada and Tennis Alberta. For more information on these programs please go to www.tennisalberta.com.

The Club has a number of tennis programs in the Fall, Winter and Spring sessions. For youth, there are several levels: Early starters (4-7 years), Futures (10 & under), 11 and over, Jr B (some tournament play), Foundation U11 (3 times a week), Competition U14 (6-7 hours per week), Performance U18 (7 hours per week), Elite (Juniors who can play during the day, 11 hours per week). For adults there are several adult leagues, including men's doubles, ladies doubles, and mixed doubles. Daytime and evening leagues and ladders are available. Group lessons and private lessons are also available.
